Good...But You Must Keep Yourself Up-to-Date!Mar 02, 2012
By M. Lu My Company gave me a set of Becker materials but I didn't make good use of it. I only used one section and left the rest on my shelf until they expired. Now that I'm serious about passing the CPA, I have to buy my own materials. And I bought Wiley.
Actually, I like Becker study materials more because they were higher quality, more up-to-date, and easier to use. Becker would send out updates when the test or subject matter changed. Becker lays it all out there, you just have to follow along, dedicate yourself to the materials, and put in earnest effort to pass.
If you're considering on using only Wiley books alone, be honest with yourself on how much hand-holding you're going to need from your CPA review materials. Wiley books are lot cheaper compared to other studying aids, but you have to put in a lot more effort in order to pass. In my opnion, all the CPA review programs out there are pretty good. But they cater to different types of students with different studying habits. If you're a super orgnizational maven, and a control freak who usually does everything yourself, then Wiley will probably work well for you :)
After using Becker and then Wiley, I think the Wiley books are on a 1.5 year lag (probably due to how long it takes to edit and publish a book). And unlike a real review course with instructors and other services, it lacks the online/email support that usually provides users with updates on lastest changes and additions to the CPA exam. I bought the 2011 version of this book, but the info all referred to 2009 and 2010. So, when I was studying for REG, I would cross reference the information in the book with IRS.gov to see if anything changed. I found several changes that were not in the book. But I was able to successfully incorporate that into my notes/flashcards. I felt up-to-date and was still well-prepared for the exam.
This was my method (mind you that I don't know anything about taxes--I'm an auditor, never took a tax class, and I have a CPA who does my taxes): I read the book, took detailed notes, organized and reviewed my notes everyday, made some flashcards (and used my old Becker ones), did the practice questions/full-length exams, looked up and reviewed material for those questions I got wrong, AND went online to AICPA and IRS to check that I was learning the most current information that will be tested on the exam. That last part was KEY because the book is on a lag. You MUST keep up with the changes yourself!
Why Wiley? The price was my motivator. I compared $$ to $$$$ and bought Wiley books and Test Bank CD over what Becker quoted me to renew my existing company account. I put in the effort and guess what, I was still able to pass using Wiley. You have to have the self-discipline to put in the work. Other-wise, pay for a program that will spoon feed it to you. (NOTE: The Test Bank CD is essential for practice questions and full length exams.)
LAST TIP: Go to the AICPA website to do the practice exam a day or two before your test. They only offer 4 MC's and 1 short SIM to let test takers get a taste of what it is going to be like. But I was fortunate enough to have gotten 2 out of the 4 MCs and the actual SIM (but a longer and more detailed version) on my exam. And I have heard similar stories from others (there are also people who reported not seeing any similar questions though). But why take chances... It's free, takes a few minutes, so take advantage. Every little bit helps!

My View on the Pros And ConsFeb 13, 2012
By Stephanie Ng
"IPassTheCPAExam,com"
Hello, I run a CPA exam prep site and I would like to share my thoughts on the pros and cons of this latest 2012 Wiley CPA exam review on REG.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THIS BOOK
The book begins with 4 chapters covering the basics of the CPA exam, including what you should expect as a first-time candidate, how grading is calculated and a few tips on how to study and pass the exam.
Then, the book goes through the topics in detail, with each of the 12 modules of business regulations and 5 modules of taxation. The length of each module varies greatly, but you can expect shorter sections for (~15 - 30 pages of study materials) vs longer sections for tax (~ 20-60 pages of study materials).
Each module has tons of MC questions and simulations. Answers with explanations / sample answers are provided for both MCQs and simulations.
There are also 3 appendices with a sample REG exam as well as released questions from the AICPA.
PROS
1. Well-Written. The book is generally well organized covering all the hottest topics on REG, including business structures, contracts, bankruptcy, and individual & corporate tax.
2. Great Value-For-Money. This is one of the most affordable CPA review materials you can find anywhere. The book is also updated on an annual basis -- no wonder it is the best-selling CPA review books on Amazon (by the way, get this here instead of bookstore or Wiley's website -- cheaper here)
3. Competitors Are Using Wiley As Supplements. A few CPA exam review courses such as Roger CPA Review and Yaeger CPA Review use Wiley's books and CDs to complement their lectures. In fact, Yaeger's DVD course spend a lot of time going through Wiley's MC questions as a way to clarify the accounting concepts.
CONS
1. It Over-Prepares You. While I have to say this Wiley book is shorter than the previous versions, it is still too comprehensive, and thus overwhelming and discouraging when you have to go through the entire book by yourself. Other study guides or lecture notes are more concise and present only the materials you need to know for the CPA exam.
2. Layout Not User Friendly. Since you may be buying the book without physically flipping through it, I think it will be helpful to describe the overall feel and layout of the book. Well, despite the colorful cover, the book is actually printed in thin newspaper print. The questions and answers are often straddle between pages so it is very annoying to flip back and forth to read the answers. It might not sound like a big deal, but many readers of my site have joined in the complaints in this particular aspect.
3. Not An Integrated Approach. If you like this Wiley CPA review book, I strongly encourage you to get the Wiley CPA Exam Review 2012 Test Bank 1 Year Access, Regulation for the practice questions in computerized format. However, the Wiley book + software combo is still far from the "guided review course" with lectures and a channel for you to ask a question or clarify a concept. In my opinion, the guided reviews, be it a live class or a self-study DVD, is a more integrated and thus better approach.
CONCLUSION
Many candidates manage to pass the CPA exam with Wiley product alone, so it is a good set of review guides. What you need to do now is to determine whether you are disciplined enough to study without a guided review course, that you have the time and energy to read through the entire book, and that you won't be bothered by the relatively poor layout and format. Best of luck to your exam!

Very detailed workbook with unbeatable priceFeb 13, 2012
By *Quick* The price is unbeatable, that's the first reason I choose this book. Beside that, the book is so detailed, I could say it has all the informatino you will need in the exam. But this is also a disadvantage of the book, you may need double the time to learn it compared to other study materials. But it will worth it, since you know more knowledge, and finally you will use them in your work. I have not taken the exam yet, preparing to do it in April, I will work hard, and see how the result could be. Bless all who are going to take CPA, and this book is definitely a recommend.

DisappointedFeb 22, 2012
By Corinne Schlueter So far in one module I have come across 2 incorrect answers from the book to the answer key. The book is full of spelling and grammar errors, as is all the rest of the Wiley CPA books I have read - AUD, FAR, and BEC. I am disappointed no one did any sort of proof reading when they printed these books. It's very disgraceful.
