Versatility of styleMay 17, 2011
By MJL This collection of short stories is a fine display of literary styles. All three are rich in atmosphere but diverse in tone.
Why I Kill is narrated by a serial killer. It has a visual quality about it; very much like watching a documentary or even a taped confession. It is haunting for its cold objectivity. Groucho Riley is a third person tale of a boy born bad. The tone is less formal, less incisive but no less chilling. Both serve to remind that danger moves around us whether we see it or not and that complacency is a choice we may want to rethink. I'm not an avid reader of this genre but both were well written and impactful.
The third story, Mirror, Mirror, is another matter altogether and made me decide to actually write a review. Taken at face value, it depicts the relationship between an isolated man and an elusive woman: poetic and sensuous and even erotic in the literary sense. It can be enjoyed fully on that level for the language alone but if you are the type of reader who likes to move into a story and take up temporary residence, you'll find much more to feast on. I wouldn't dream of spoiling the experience of reading it for anyone else but will state instead that this will appeal to those who appreciate the opportunity to let their own imagination take flight.
I purchased this collection because I was moved by Killing a Friend - I was fortunate to stumble upon it. I wish that good literary fiction was easier to find in the "e-stacks". If it was, I'm sure I wouldn't be the first to review either of these books.

DisappointedApr 25, 2012
By Molly Dudek The book was very short. It is not a true crime book... so if your looking for that you will be disappointed.

Interesting 1 hour read...Mar 05, 2012
By The Islander I am not a smart or fast reader, so it was a little disappointing to read this book so fast. It's not very long, and I suppose I was under the impression it was true crime or true stories since I found it under that category,so this is maybe why I am so disappointed. It is more like literature than it has the value of true crime.

By kristi350 This was quite dissapointing. It took me 20 mins to read and was not accurately described. It should not have been in the category it was.
