 eBook version: good idea, doesn't workJul 17, 2011

I'm sold on eBooks and do all of my reading-for-pleasure that way, so I was excited to try an important medical text on my Kindle. Unfortunately, it simply didn't work. The chief problem is that it is very difficult to find anything. In a physical book, one can quickly page through to the desired chapter or index entry. Not so with the Harriet Lane in the Kindle. Firstly, the chapter entries in the Table of Contents are not clickable links, so there is no easy way to get to the first page of a chapter, the formulary, or the index. Using the Kindle search to find a topic or drug isn't helpful, because of course, typing in "amoxicillin" or "endocarditis" produces every reference to amoxicillin or endocarditis in the entire book - up to several pages of search results. To make it worse, the first mention of a drug in its formulary entry is as a graphic, not text, so it doesn't show up in a Kindle search.
There is also a glitch in the index. Page numbers after each index entry ARE clickable links, but the links to formulary entries are "misaligned." Clicking on the page number for a drug took me to the wrong formulary page, for the 3-4 drugs I checked.
Clearly, for a textbook to work on an ereader, the whole search method must be reworked. A simple method that displays every time a particular word appears in the book is plainly inadequate. So, just buy the real book.

I really liked how concise it is on the management of diverse pediatric pathologies, specially the algorithms. I am a med student and I found it very useful during my internship in pediatrics, specially in the emergency department. The section with the drugs and all the tips about them (dosage, adverse effects, when not to use it, etc) are really helpful for med students who won't specialise in this area and who want to have a general knowledge on this subject.
It's very helpful for a review on the area, not as a book for the first study of this subject.

Very peds focused. I purchased this item before starting my peds rotations in FNP school and it was a life-saver. Additionally I have used older versions of this book in acute care for years, as have MD associates as well. I will hold on to this one, and recommend it strongly! (especially over lexicomps peds drugbook--waste of money)

The Harriet Lane Handbook has long been a trusted resource for pediatric residents and a good quick reference for practicing pediatricians. Even in this day of internet access, having a pocket manual for quick access is valuable. The book is updated by the residents at John's Hopkins every couple of years and therefore remains current. It contains concise information on development, immunology, infectious diseases, drug doses, nutrition, lab values, etc etc.

I had an attending chastise me at one point for not carrying around a Harriet Lane. It is a good book, but I don't think it's necessarily the best. It's main weakness is that it is too big to carry in your pocket book; it is by no means pocket size. It's not the best for medical students as it often doesn't include basic things like common presenting symptoms of common disease. But it's considered the gold standard for residency.
