sometimes wide, sometimes deep...Aug 12, 2009
By g-man I was looking for a book on alarm systems first and general home security second. Did this book fit the bill?
Let me say this book covers lots of related subjects, from history of locks and home automation to designing websites (if you are a locksmith and want to have WWW presence) and home safes.
This book also has some manuals for some security-related products, including product warranties.
So, while it covers lots of subjects and goes into technical details (ex: how to install), I didn't find substance I was looking for, so was somewhat disappointed. There is nothing in the book about alarm central station monitoring, nothing about specific panels and non-phone monitoring options (internet and GSM).
However, it does include interesting info about magnetic sensors that was new to me (even after countless hours on internet forums) and enough of other information that made me give this book a solid 3 stars (could be even 4)
Your mileage may vary though, especially if you are just looking for general home security information - in this case it would be a recommended buy.

This book is so outdated and the title is very pretentious.Sep 22, 2010
By quickquickMc I been in the Security business for about a year and ordered Bill Phillips Home, site, and office security book to get some answers to questions I have regarding to situations I find in the job sometimes.
Oh boy, at first the book looks are deceiving by its size(300 pages) and its title. Mainly Mr. Phillips did an outstanding job in filling up this book with just junk, most of it outdated information. Just to give you an example, when he lighlty touches CCTV he only mentions that the only way to record video is bay using a VHS tape recorder, HA HA HA, come on!! we well know that the VCR is old gone in its use in CCTV and now the main players are the DVR, NVR and so on. On another chapter he dedicates to SAFES, I expected him to mention about how to protect those valuables keeping artifacts from being broken into, he says nothing about it, mainly he fills up pages with old black and white pictures and concludes that the best safe is the most expensive safe, ????? Because he doesn't have the expertise he needs to have in order write a decent book with that title, he divides this piece of crap in 22 chapters with the enticing names as: history of loss prevention, securing windows(not with electronic devices but with window film? and window stops,Home automation, Safes and Vaults, Automobile security, Home and office insurance(he might as well plug an insurance company commercial), Neighborhood Crime Watchers, Computer Security, Choosing and using security Professionals, Preventing and surviving Home Fires, Terrorism, Creating a Web site, A test for a Profesional locksmith. At the end he just throws in there a couple of Securitron locks literature, with no input of his own.
All of his Chapters he touches them very superficially without any substance and basically we don't need to pay for this info, most of it is basic common sense.
Mr Bill Phillips, if you are not a fraud, please stop writing books about Security and its vast scope, just stick to Locks .
I ordered at the same time Home Security System by Delton T. Horn, in my opinion this book is worth its price, for those interested in the electronics side of Security.

better for study than practical applicationMar 26, 2010

This is a really good product with some great information. it appears to be written for those considering a career in the home security/locksmith fields and not for the home/business owner trying to protect themselves and their property. if you are looking for a product for more personal use there are others out there that are much better. if you want to know specs on security systems, lighting systems, lock systems etc, then this would be a great starting point for you.

A Good Security ReferenceJul 08, 2007
By Michael Chesbro The Complete Book of Home, Site, and Office Security provides the reader with an excellent overview of security; from locks, to alarms, to lighting, to CCTV, and more. Whether you are a homeowner interested in adding some additional security to your home, or a security professional wanting a basic professional reference, this book is an excellent choice.
The book is easy to read for someone with no background in security, yet contains enough technical information to make it valuable for the security professional. The author, Mr. Phillips, is the author of several other security books (all of which I enjoyed) and is more than qualified to write on this topic.

Could have used some proofreading and editing and some actual useful informationNov 07, 2010
By DBCooper Overall, I'd say this book is barely adequate for anyone who is looking for a very general overview of security procedures and technologies. Anyone with more than a passing acquaintance with modern security systems won't gain anything from this book.
A few glaring problems with this book:
There's absolutely no mention of how much of today's (and 2006's) security technologies are moving towards IP-based operation.
A lot of the content just seems like pointless filler. Instead of putting in technical manuals for specific products and pointless tests in this book, the author could have greatly expanded on the pathetically paltry sections on CCTV(5 pages out of 300?!) and Access Control(8 pages).
The chapters are confusingly laid out in seemingly random order. Nothing ties them together except for the fact that they fall loosely under the topic of physical security. The author does a very poor job of describing how the different technologies that make up a security system interact.
A lot of space is wasted on pointless things such as the history of locks or the Camden County Georgia Sheriff's Office's view on terrorism(the author apparently copied and pasted that section directly from their website).
It's just poorly written. Glaring mistakes in grammar make it difficult to read at times. It doesn't seem like anyone proofread the manuscript before it was sent to the printer. With poor grammar, pointless filler material, and absolutely no logical layout to this book, it comes off as strikingly amateurish.
