Provides a good introduction to information securityJan 18, 2012
By Ben Rothke
"Author of 'Computer Security: 20 Things Every Employee Should Know'"
For those that want a 1,000+ page book on information security, there are plenty around. Surprisingly, there is a limited amount of introductory texts to this most important topic. To the rescue comes The Basics of Information Security: Understanding the Fundamentals of InfoSec in Theory and Practice.
At 175 pages, the book does not kill many trees, but does give the reader an overview of all of the key principles around information security.
Those looking for information security certification, the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Common Body of Knowledge (CBK) covers the topics relevant to information security professionals. The CISSP CBK establishes a common framework of information security terms and principles that allow information security professionals worldwide to discuss matters pertaining to the profession with a common understanding.
The books 10 chapters are closely tied to the CBK and provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the core topics around information security. This includes detailed chapters on identification and authentication, authorization and access control, cryptography, physical security operating system security and more.
The book makes ample use of pictures and figures to make many of the often abstract ideas easier to understand. Each chapter also ends with exercise questions to move the topic from theory to practice.
As indicative from the CBK, information security is an overwhelming body of knowledge, and for many it can indeed be a far too tremendous body of text to attempt to cover. To that effort this book is an invaluable resource as it covers the key areas without getting bogged down in the minutia.
For those looking to get their feet wet in the deep waters of information security, The Basics of Information Security: Understanding the Fundamentals of InfoSec in Theory and Practice is a great place to start.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? CHECK THIS BOOK OUTSep 12, 2011
By John R. Vacca
"Tech Write Independent Reviewer"
Are you a beginning security professional; as well as, a network and system administrator? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Jason Andress, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that can be used to develop a better understanding of how to protect information assets and defend against attacks; as well as, how to apply these concepts practically.
Andress, begins by covering some of the most basic concepts of information security. In addition, the author covers the security principles of identification and authentication. He then discusses the use of authorization and access control. The author then, discusses the use of auditing and accountability. He continues by discussing the use of cryptography. In addition, the author covers operational security. He then discusses physical security. The author then shows you how to protect networks from a variety of different angles. Then, he explores hardening as one of the primary tools for securing the operating system and the steps that might be taken to do so. Finally, he shows you different ways in which to secure applications.
This most excellent book, provides the reader with a basic knowledge of information security in both theoretical and practical aspects. Perhaps more importantly, the concepts discussed in this book can be used to drive security projects and policies, in order to mitigate some of the issues discussed.

Great Basic BookJun 29, 2011
By R00k There are a million basic security books out there and I've read a bunch of them at one time or another. This book does a great job of explaining the basics without getting bogged down with too much detail. I think one of the problems that I see in some of the other books is that they are either aimed at a certification (like the sec+) or are setup to be a heavy text book. Neither of these approaches is great for explaining the basic concepts of security in a general way. The author walks you through many of the fundamental ideas of security like CIA, authentication and crypto, then moves on to some applications of these ideas in areas like operating system security, network security and physical security, among others. One of my favorites was the chapter on operations security, something that I don't generally see covered in any detail in basic security books. Loved the book and I'm going to pick up a few copies for people at work that need some education in this area.
