| | | | Biometrics | Home » » Russia's Islamic Threat | | | | | | | Description: | | The notion that the Chechen-led jihad in the North Caucasus is an indigenous affair, far removed from the global Islamist jihad, is perhaps comforting to Americans and other Westerners, but it is a myth. Moreover, the North Caucasus jihad may be the harbinger of a much larger Muslim challenge to Russia’s political stability and state integrity. So concludes Gordon M. Hahn in this meticulously researched analysis of Russia’s emerging Islamic threat. Hahn draws an explicit picture of an already sophisticated and effective Chechen jihadist network that is expanding the territorial scope of its operations with inspiration and some assistance from the global jihadist movement. Given its proximity to large stockpiles of diverse weapons, the expanding population of Russian-based Islamist terrorists is particular cause for alarm, the author warns. The book lifts the veil on the Muslim challenge to Russia’s political stability, national security, and state integrity as well as the potentially grave threat to international and U.S. security. Hahn shows that many of the demographic, historical, socioeconomic, political, and religious factors sparking jihadi revolution in Muslim countries are extant in Russia and are driving revolutionary Islamist terrorism there. In a penetrating conclusion to the book, the author analyzes the policies that have fueled the rise of militant Islam and offers a series of important recommendations for policymakers.

By dissatisfied The book offers an excellent overview of the role of islam in Russia with focus on the Chechen conflicts. Last section on the threats to the international community is a bit light, but if you read the book you can draw your own conclusions.

Russia's Islamic ThreatAug 22, 2009

Russia's Islamic ThreatThis is published by Yale University press so the language is more academic and conscience making this a challenging book to read through, but if your looking for a detailed book on Islamic Terrorism in Russia then this is the book for you.
In Russia's Islamic Threat, Gordon M. Hahn talks about the spreading jihadist movement throughout many of the Muslim republics within Russia, beyond Chechnya and potential reasons why jihad is such an appealing idea to some Muslim populations within Russia like mass unemployment, and a state tendency to favor the Slavic majority within Russia. He also discusses how Vladimir Putin's recentralization of power away from the individial regions and into the hands of the state could and in many republics has given rise to radical Islamic cells within these republics that have carried out terrorist attacks in places such as Ingushetia, Dagestan, and the KBR.
Hahn closes with a discussion of policy steps that can be taken by both US and Russian forces to combat Islamic terrorism and decrease the likelihood of another Beslan or even worse a terrorist getting his hands on Nuclear material and creating a weapon that can be used to inflict mass casualties.
