 Good, But Suffers From Poor WritingSep 12, 2010

It seems that the negative customer reviews of this textbook have focused on it being dense and hard-to-understand. I believe that this is true, but it's not because of the content of the ideas; indeed, I've found this textbook to be a pretty darn good introduction to research. Many topics are introduced and explained at length, and I'd be a liar if I said I didn't learn anything from reading it. I have a better understanding of research methods, terminology, and techniques for appraising various types of research coming out than I did going in.
The book's big problem- its most basic flaw- is that much of the writing is jargon-intense, academy-approved academiababble. It's not that the words are too large all of the time; they're not. In fact, important new terms are highlighted and explained quite coherently. However, there are more than a few passages containing sentences in excess of three, four, even five dozen words or more. I'm talking paragraph-length sentences, here. In places, the text looks like so much word salad. It's all a little hard on the eyes.
The authors are in love (and rightly so!) with the law of triple, which all of us use all of the time when writing in good English; here, however, they don't want you to forget that they are talking about "an idea, concept, or theory," so instead of coming up with a way to state what they mean in a way that avoids repeating those terms, they will simply say "idea, concept, or theory" every time they refer to an idea that could apply to all three of those things. It seems like a small, silly thing when I explain it like this, but they way they do it adds dozens and dozens of words to the text; brevity was not their goal.
Then, unfortunately, there is writing which really is nothing but pure PhD-inspired babble. Another reviewer already cited an example that caught my attention when I read it in the book: "Midrange theory is a focused conceptual structure that synthesizes practice-research into ideas central to the discipline." You might be saying to yourself, "Hum, that's no so bad. What's the problem?" Well, the problem is that that sentence is poorly written, conveys little useful information, and is composed almost entirely of jargon. What is a focused conceptual structure? They don't say. What on God's green Earth are "practice-ideas," and what does "synthesize" mean in this context? Are the "ideas central to the discipline" the same as the "practice-ideas?" They never say. And, while this type of writing doesn't dominate the text, it occurs often enough to be a severely annoying distraction.
Finally, the authors do tend to, as stated by other reviewers, sometimes talk around concepts rather than about them. It's like they have a big idea they want to explain, but to do so, they talk about how the idea relates to other ideas, instead of talking about the big idea itself. For me, it wasn't that big of a deal, but more than a few of my classmates were ready to burn this book by the time we were done with it. To me, it's really an okay book,though.

I am currently taking a Research in Nursing course using the fifth edition of this book. I have had over seventeen years experience at reading technical papers and research and never have I had such a hard time reading anything. The author writes using a lot of technical terminology combined with a very high level of writing (i.e. big words) without prior definition of the terminology and poor hierarchical organization of information.
Here is an example, "Midrange theory is a focused conceptual structure that synthesizes practice-research into ideas central to the discipline."
Why not just say, "A simple way to define midrange theory is to consider them as theories that are not as difficult to apply to real life as grand theories, but not as hypothetical as the day to day hypothesis of every day nursing practice."
The charts and illustrations are not much better and do little to summarize the main points of what is written.

The reason this book can be difficult to read is because it's poorly written. I won't go into the details already mentioned in other reviews but what annoyed me about this book was that terms were introduced in early chapters that were not discussed until the middle or end of the book. Additionally, some terms were never defined leaving more me confused. As others have mentioned, a lot of jargon was used repeatedly. I purchased the text with the workbook and that was useless too.

The book is a fairly easy read, but the number of citations gets in the way of the readability. Lots of article examples (also referred to frequently) if you are a novice. Good quick reference, but not a "I'm ready to tackle a research project" quality.

The book is technical in nature and will not appeal to a very wide audience other than those like me taking a college class. For those who critique research articles this is a book that you would want by your side.
