I've only read through the orientation which is required for the first week of class. Let me tell you that as someone who's taking this course as a prerequisite, I am thoroughly disappointed! I've been in IT for almost 20 years and have seen everything there is to see.
I'm not even in the first chapter and so far I have seen incorrect, or completely missing information! We are required to answer questions at the end of each chapter contained in the book on CD. The book on CD cannot be searched using control-F. In fact, there is no way to search the book! So when you're asked a question, you have to find out the exact wording of what the book is looking for. And guess what? THE ANSWERS ARE NOT IN THE STINKING BOOK! Look at the orientation question for security suites. It asks "True or false, anti-virus programs are part of security suites?" There is nothing in the section on security suites about anti-virus programs! And even though I knew the answer, I didn't know what the book was looking for!
The other thing I ran into that was just plain wrong AND not in the book, was the question about powering-down a PC. Any idiot knows that every PC made since 2001 can be powered-down by pressing the power button. And it will do it safely as long you don't hold down the button to make it hard power-down. But the question asks "True or false, you should only power down a PC using the operating system blah blah blah." Well, it's false of course! But NO! The answer according to this idiotic book is TRUE! And guess what? That information isn't even in the book! Go ahead and look at the power section! Nothing whatsoever is written about using or not using the power button when powering off the PC, only while powering on!
What a piece of garbage! Instructors: DO NOT USE THIS BOOK! Your experienced students will pull their hair out in frustration with how terrible it is. And your inexperienced students will do the same but because of how confusing and contradictory it is! At least you'll get everyone together, but they will be together against you!

I agree with Frozen Toes. I'm currently using this book for an intro computer course which is required before I can take PhotoShop. I have some practical experience with computers but nothing formal.
We are required to answer questions at the end of each chapter contained in the book on CD, because the CD can be set up to 'track" your scores and progress. Great for the professor because they don't have to correct homework. The book on CD cannot be searched. There is a diagram at the end of Chapter 1 that doesn't even ask questions, there are just blank spots, although there are no other diagrams in the chapter. I honestly don't know what information they're looking for, very frustraiting.
This book is indeed confusing and contradictory. I'm a motivated student, but I always leave the work in this book to last because it's so frustraiting. I'm assuming my professor knows the authors personally.

This book is an excellent introduction to every aspect of modern computing. It is equally good for self-study as for classroom study. It begins with the absolute basics in the first chapter, which might be off-putting for readers who have been digital citizens for a while. (Keep in mind that the authors are making sure that everyone has the same level of understanding before they move on to mode advanced material.) The authors then reveal thousands of important computing ideas along a gradual, colorful, and engaging learning curve.
This text provides plain-language answers to many questions that even digital natives may have been afraid to ask. Moreover, the answers are always clear and concise. To its great credit, this book does not limit the discussion to hardware and software, but dives into the social and ethical aspects of computing. These topics are great fodder for classroom-- end even dining room(!)-- conversation.
To its great credit, this very heavy book comes with a CD that contains the entire text, interactive exercises, and live links to Web content. Learners can load the CD on their laptops and spare themselves the strain of lugging the book around. The program on the CD allows the reader to make annotations and to save bookmarks and quiz results.
If you feel that you could stand to learn more about the digital landscape around you, you will enjoy everything about this book!

I liked this product but it was bent and a little scuffed up when I recieved it. Its too much money for that type of care!
