I only have 6 months of real experience. I bought the big Sybex Comptia A+ Study Guide and studied it hard for ~3-4 weeks. I went in to the 220-701 feeling totally prepared and confident. After the first 5 questions I felt helpless, stupid and defeated but somehow I barely passed. I knew right then and there that the Sybex book wasn't working for me so I ordered this book. I got it on a Tuesday afternoon and read the whole thing by Friday to take the test. I passed with total confidence.
The book is a short and to the point. Very concentrated. The practice test it comes with is way better than the one that comes with Sybex. I highly recommend this book!

Great if you already have some experienceOct 15, 2010

This book is meant to "fill in the gaps" to prepare for the A+ exams. If you've built a couple PCs, installed Windows a couple times, and have set up your own basic home network then this is a good choice for you, as you probably already know about half of what's on the exams. This book will review what you've learned and teach you some things you probably haven't run into yet.
If you've never jumpered a hard drive or edited the registry, then you'll want one of those bigger, comprehensive A+ study guides as this book is a little short to bring you from beginner to expert.
Get it if you're looking to turn your amateur hobby into an industry-recognized certification.

As others have said, this works very well as a review; however, I would not have scored well without using a couple of other books. PASSPORT covers the bulk of the concepts, but the actual test has a lot of quirky, picky questions about differences between versions of Windows, cables, wireless protocols, viruses vs spyware, and troubleshooting "theory," that are just passed over or not present here.
But I did need this as a refreshing review of what would likely show up on the exams. I read this cover to cover in about four days after spending over three weeks studying and reading all of Jean Andrews's IN DEPTH bible. It helped me focus on what was important, mostly.
And, in fact, a few points about file permissions and network concepts were made clearer by Mr. Meyers.
I also, at the last moment, used the big, 800 question Q&A book, and that made the difference between just passing and getting decent scores in the 800's.
The CD in the back has one practice exam for Essentials and one for Practice. It was also very helpful and comes close to the actual exam interface, but the exam questions were generally a little tougher, and in some cases much harder.
In short, this was an essential part in a three pronged attack on the exams.

Concise - A great book for those with experienceMar 22, 2011

I am probably repeating what others have already said, but I used this book as a two-book approach. I slogged my way through about 3/4 of the Sybex book when I discovered this gem. If you already have a lot of PC experience and just want the certification, this book is for you. The Sybex book had way too much detail needed to pass the exam. I finished that book and went on to this book. What a relief. Mike goes through the exam objectives in order without explaining the extra details of how a computer works or how to perform a simple hardware task. I liked the Checkpoints at the end of each chapter that reviewed the numbered exam objectives. I also liked the ETA's at the beginning of each chapter that estimated the time needed for Newbie, Some Experience, and Expert. There are 688 concise pages of chapter material plus an excellent glossary. I got out my highlighter and dove in. I was under a tight time constraint as I wanted to get the exam taken by the 1/1/11 deadline for lifetime certification. The Sybex book had slowed me down and the end of the year was fast approaching. I procrastinated scheduling the test and when I went to schedule the exam around Christmas, there were no testing centers in the Albuquerque area that were open. I found one open in El Paso, TX, so I drove down there and took the exam on 12/28/2010. I passed with 827 on the Essentials and 848 on the the Practical. The questions I missed were not because of not being covered by the books, but my carelessness in reading the questions and because the wording of some questions were rather odd. I had plenty of time to review the questions but I got too excited to see my score and terminated the test. Don't do that! If you have time, review every question in the exam. So, in summary, maybe not a book for the absolute newbie, but excellent for the experienced.

Passport offers good reviewOct 28, 2010

This book does what it advertises. It offers a rapid solid coverage of the material, perfect for those with prior experience and comfort with the subjects or as overlay on a different book series. Don't get me wrong, this book does cover details (it isn't just "overview")... it is quick about it so if you need more "introduction" or "background" info just use his full A+ book CompTIA A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Sixth Edition or similar.
If a beginner, maybe use one "thick book" by one author and a "thin book" or "cram" by another author. This book is midway between being a "cram" and a "thick book" and is great in that regard.
A more direct approach to the two book method is working a really thorough practice problem set such as CompTIA A+ 2010 Complete Home Study.
