This book has everything you would want to know about the subject matter. It can serve as an indispensable guide to what you need to know about why and how to buy and implement an electonic health record. Published in September 2010, it has information from as recently as June. It includes the expected requirements for Meaningful Use of EHRs over the coming years. One learns of the potential benefits that can be gained but the authors are careful to make clear that EHRs aren't a panacea for healthcare--a lot of good planning and well-managed implementation are necessary. The book is a beginning guide to that planning. There are many references and pointers to web content. The book is also available for download as a PDF directly from the publisher.

I have been reviewing material for the development of medical informatics undergraduate courses for several months. The Hoyt/Yoshihashi book is one of several books which I purchased early in my research and it is the only one that I keep coming back to again and again. I have gained extensive familiarity with a number of professional and government websites and journal sites and still have returned frequently to the Hoyt/Yoshihashi book for better explanations and examples. It is simply the most readable and practical review of medical informatics topics that I have discovered. When I want additional information, I look to the Chapter references before embarking on my own search. In addition, I discovered the authors' resource site that grants me access to hundreds of current resources which further simplifies my search for additional material. I have found this to be an excellent resource for the work that I am doing.

I purchased this book for a class and expected it would meet the objectives for the course. I did not expect that I would be able to apply so much of its contents to my current job. I have found this book to be very informative, practical, and useful. It not only discusses several aspects of technology in healthcare, but ties them all together to create a cohesive understanding. A+!

This book is horrible!
First, it is untrustworthy. The author uses unreliable sources such as Wikipedia and about.com. The book is not peer-reviewed, but is self-published through Lulu.com publishing, a self publisher, which means that the information inside hasn't been verified by a peer-review panel for accuracy. Not only has it not been verified, but no text book publisher picked up the book for publication. Probably because of the unreliable sources and shoddy research. Anyone with half a brain in research writing knows that you must use reliable sources. With all the misinformation and unethical practices in research and research writing, this book demonstrates all that these practices are NOT supposed to be. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible! University students fail classes for presenting such unreliable research as this book is guilty of. If you want to teach your students bad habits that will get them mocked in the real world of research, by all means use this book. Otherwise, the garbage can is the place for this piece of fiction.

I had to get this book for a class, and I just noticed that it references Wikipedia, as well as about.com. Well, now I know I can't really trust anything it says.
