Excellent new edition of a superb text book!May 14, 2011

Last year I called Professor Bidgoli's MIS 2010 college textbook "the missing link in college education" preparing students for real life applications of computer science and information systems. And as all changes in the 21st century are happening much faster than ever before, the same applies to management information systems (MIS). So to keep-up with the changes, Professor Bidgoli released the second edition of his text book MIS2.
Similarly to the first edition of this book MIS2 includes a wide variety of the auxiliary teaching aids, case studies, videos, quizzes, and interactive online study tools.
Chapter 1 - "Information Systems: An Overview" focuses on gaining competitive advantage using IS. The new topics covered in this edition are:
* A New Era of Marketing: YouTube
* Social Networking and Vulnerability of Personal Information
* The IT Job Market
New topics in Chapter 2 - "Computers: The Machines Behind Computing", which is dedicated to upcoming I/O and memory devices as well as operating systems, are Popular iPad Business Applications
In Chapter 3 - "Database Systems, Data Warehouses, and Data Marts" the readers are getting a taste of Business Intelligence. New case studies in this chapter include:
* Data Warehouse Applications at InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG)
* Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing at Harrah's Entertainment, Inc.
Chapter 4 - "Personal, Legal, Ethical, & Organizational Issues of Information Systems" discuses reduction of organizational and personal risks, while the new topics in this edition include:

* Green computing
Chapter 5 - "Protecting Information Resources" highlights awareness, safeguards, and protection of information resources. New topics discussed in this chapter:

Here Professor Bidgoli quotes some experts, predicting the state of The Internet in 2020. An interesting exercise could be looking back to this predictions in 9 years from now ' And a new topic discussed in this chapter is

Chapter 8 - "Electronic Commerce" highlights successful E-commerce business models and technologies. New topic in this chapter is about Twitter helping businesses to find customers
Chapter 9 - "Global Information Systems" is dedicated to globalization of information systems. And case studies here include:

* Multinational Companies could break the Language Barriers on the Web
Chapter 10 - "Building Successful Information Systems" highlights modern systems analysis and design. New topics and case studies include:
* Agile Methodology at Overstock.Com
* Crowdsourcing

Chapter 11 - "Enterprise Systems" describes increasing productivity and improving customer service in modern enterprises. A new case study here presents how ERP Streamlines Operations at Naghi Group
Chapter 12 - "Management Support Systems" focuses on improving and expediting decision making process. And a new and hot topic here is Groupware and Health IT
Chapter 13 - "Intelligent Information Systems" is dedicated to intelligent Computing and Beyond! It gives a concise, excellent overview of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robots, expert systems, case-based reasoning, fuzzy logic, neural networks, genetic algorithms and natural language processing systems. Chapter 14 - "Emerging Trends, Technologies, and Applications" highlights cloud computing and virtual worlds. New topics and cases studies describe:

It's also very important to mention the four Appendices that are available online;
* Appendix A - Modeling Analysis with Excel

* Appendix C - Database Management with Excel
* Appendix D - Web Development Literacy and Microsoft Expression Web 4
As its "older brother" MIS, this second edition MIS2 is a priceless teaching tool for any school of business, science or engineering. It will encourage students to relate the theoretical aspects of different subjects in computer science and information systems to real life implementations of these topics.
I also believe, because of the way it's written with a variety of cool auxiliary tools and online references, that this book can be used as a reference guide for popularization and demystification of MIS in any modern business and even at home.

I used Dr. Bidgoli's MIS book in my Information Systems course and I absolutely loved it! The book is well written and easy to understand. The book's format is very effective for any student to learn the material with each chapter only including key information and ranging from 17 to 20 pages. The book is informative, current, and thorough but doesn't include irrelevant information, like so many other college textbooks. It also includes an online companion website that can be used from any device to access quizzes, videos, best problems, PowerPoint slides and other helpful information to assist students in learning the material.
The book includes many real life examples and cases that prepare students to use information systems in real world situation.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about MIS.

The book is a good reference, it was required for class at Faulkner University. I would purchase again if class required.
