I recently took and passed the 70-680 this morning by using this book. I feel it is only fair to say that it was not my only source but one of my main sources of study.
I personally thought the exam in the book was harder than the actual test. Not the chapter exams, the exam on the CD. With that being said, I would say if you can pass the test on the CD, you can pass the actual exam. I really enjoyed the pre-test format of the book. Each chapter began with a pre-test that would help you determine if you should read the entire chapter, a section of the chapter or just skip to the review topics point in the chapter. Every chapter also included a memory table with keywords that you were asked to fill out from memory. I did that for every chapter and it really helped when I saw questions I didn't recognize but could eliminate due to knowing exactly what a option was or what it did.
I think the most obvious question people will have about the book:
Deployment section - Although I did not use all of the commands in this book to lab for the deployment(I used CBT Nuggets and Train Signal) the beginning ones I used were fine. As I am sure some of you know, the MS press book is riddled with errors, so much there is an errata thread about it. I only state this because as soon as you start using the commands from the MS press book you are met with commands that don't work. And that adds to an extremely frustrating lab experience.
In conclusion, I believe this book should definitely be added to any study regiment when preparing for the 680 exam. With all the information in this book, you can probably pass with this alone but I would not recommend that. These types of exams are heavy on understanding and being able to do things. The only way to ensure both is by experience(in other words labs)
I hope this review is helpful to all those that come across it. I don't write reviews much but seeing as how this book has none and it IS a good source. I figured why not.

This book is an Exam Cram type of book. It is not intended to provide you with a complete and total description of the Windows 7 operating System. Instead it is specifically oriented to helping the reader pass the Microsoft MCTS Windows 7 Certification Exam (70-680). It succeeds at that goal. Having said that, I don't think that this should be the only book you should use to prepare for the exam. But I do recommend that this be one of the books you use. Using two or more books that cover the same material helps in that different authors use different words to explain things. It is often the case that the two wordings on the same item are complimentary and you know/understand that item better.
This is a large book, about 850 pages. Windows 7 is a big operating system, there's a lot to cover. It is divided into 18 chapters. Each chapter follows the old educators approach of:
. tell 'em what you're gonna tell 'em
. tell 'em
. tell 'em what you told em.
The chapters begin with a 'Do I know this already' quiz. You will probably say 'yes, I already know how to install Windows 7.' Take the quiz, you may find a surprise or two. Then read/study the chapter, and take the practice quiz at the end of each chapter. After you finish the book, use the CD that comes with the book to study the memory tables of things you should remember and then take the practice exam.

After hearing about all the complaints with the official MS Press Self-Paced Study Guide, I decided that I really needed to look elsewhere for a comprehensive guide for the 70-680. Actually, I purchased both this book and the official 70-680 Training Kit since I figured you can't get too many perspectives on this material. It seemed everywhere I turned people where talking about how hard this exam is to pass and how poor a job the official MS Press book does at covering the material.
So here's what I did to prepare: I thoroughly read this book cover to cover and did all the exercises and the practice exam on CD-ROM. After that I picked up the official MS Press 70-680 book and read through a few chapters (and was able to pick out several factual errors!) and did a few of the exercises in those chapters. Then I went through the practice exam on the included CD-ROM with that book. Frankly, I wasn't in the mood to spend another month going through the official MS Press book (and all its addenda!) since I was scoring pretty well on the practice exams. At that point I felt like I knew the objectives for the 70-680 and was more or less ready to sit for the real exam.
So I did and I earned a B+ level grade the first time.
I can honestly say that over 90% of the studying I did for the exam came from this book alone. As I was going through this book I "labbed" along with it and made sure I could do this stuff in the real world. I also watched a few of the free Professor Messer 70-680 videos online, and found those helpful.
With that said, this book ain't perfect - there are mistakes and a few errors/typos - but nothing close to what the official MS 70-680 has. Most of the time you can easily pick out the typos. The biggest mistake in the book is on page 136 where they leave out a step after step 4: you also need to copy the winpe.wim file to the iso\sources folder and rename it boot.wim before you proceed to step 5 there. But in the end I can heartily recommend this book as an alternative to the MS Press material. But I will say that having the MS Press book is good for the practice exam questions if nothing else (I find that the more practice questions I can go through, the better I can find my weaknesses).

At the time of this comment I am currently on chapter 8 of this book and I have to say that the book takes you through a lot of steps and I don't think that some of them are even necessary in fact some are almost like duh!!! The book is kind of dry... I wish it were more like a Mike Meyers book. The content of the book is however, superior to the other books on the same subject.

An Excellent Cert GuideOct 12, 2011

I choose this book after seeing the mix of reviews on the Microsoft certification guide. The reviews were much better for this guide.
Each of the eighteen chapters in this book has a pretest to determine if you need to read the chapter. Unless you have a lot of experience in various areas, I would recommend reading through the chapter anyway even if you score well on the pretest. Answers to the pretests are found in the back of the book.
At various points throughout the book are "Key Topic" icons to alert you to topics especially important to remember for the exam. At the end of each chapter the author presents a table listing all the key topics for that chapter and their page numbers - nice for quickly reviewing the important concepts. There is also a list of key terms found at the end of each chapter that the author deemed important to remember. Each chapter is preceded by a page describing what will be covered in the chapter.
At the end of the book you will find a 120 question practice exam followed by the answers and a detailed description of not just the correct answer but also the why the other answers are wrong. I found this nice because I learned a lot when reviewing the reasons for various answers being incorrect. There is also a glossary of terms that are used throughout the book and then there's the index.
People complained about lots of errors in the Microsoft guide. This guide also had some errors, but none that I felt were too significant. I have read certification guides for XP and Vista before, and I have yet to come across a certification book sans errors.
The CD has something called Memory Tables and an answer key. You can print this out for study. It is a listing of tables taken from the book. You can use these tables of important concepts to study for the exam. The CD also has the glossary which you can print out. You can access the companion web page for the book from this CD as well. Here you can register the product to activate a free online edition for 45 days. The exam on the CD is your typical test engine. It has a study mode and a test mode. The test mode presents you with a random selection of questions, and it is timed. The study mode allows choosing questions from whichever chapters you want to study. It also has the typical study options such as randomize questions, grade at end of test or grade after each question, exclude questions answered correctly, select only questions missed, etc. The questions used in the exam are the same 120 questions present at the end of the book.
Addendum to practice exam on the CD:
1. Question 32 in the book lists C as the correct answer. In the CD exam, it lists B as the correct answer, but gives the correct explanation. Book is correct.
2. Question 92 in the book lists three answers as correct: A, C, G. In the exam, it lists only A and G as correct but gives the correct explanation. Book is correct.
I think the author did an admirable job of covering the material for the exam. He also lists web references throughout the book that you might want to consult in you study.
