I just got this book and have started reading this book. It seems like there is a lot of good information but the editing is very frustrating. In the first 50 pages, there are several places where examples are cited
For example, on page 46, the book says "Here's a performace profile for a Corporate Communications Management professional:". Then there is the title of the next section: How to create a performance profile. No example. Where is it? I would like to know.
This is the 9th edition of this book in 17 years. Did they think that a proof reader wasn't needed? I will be trying to return this book tomorrow.

I've read a lot of resume books, and this book has the best advice on resume building. Most resume books show you how to construct a standard resume. This book shows you how to build a resume that will get pulled from resume databases and deliver results!
Martin Yates teaches you how to build a strong resume that highlights your strengths and focuses on your TJD (Target Job Description). I filled out his Resume Information Gathering Questionnaire and his Competitive Differentiation Questionnaire, which took a lot of time and work. Don't get me wrong, it felt a lot like homework and required a lot of motivation to complete.
I really feel like my resume has a lot of edge now, and response to my new resume has been great.
If you do the work that he asks you to do, you will see results and you'll have an awesome resume that will catch the eyes of prospective employers.

Knock 'em Dead is widely recognized one of the most valuable job search resources and this companion piece meets that standard of excellence with a focus exclusively on resumes. This is not a general job search resource (for that I recommend the most recent version of Yate's primary book, Knock 'em Dead 2011: The Ultimate Job Search Guide (Knock 'em Dead: The Ultimate Job-Seekers' Handbook)).
This book goes through every major resume format, the pros and cons of using it and situations that might call for it, then moves on to show you how to construct each. After that, there's over a hundred pages of sample resumes for every job imaginable. You'll certainly find a few with useful bullet points and phrasing for your professional history, while any one of them might have a format that you like best. I highly recommend this product.

Overview to decide if you want to read this detailed review: I'm covering how it's improved over the advice of a past resume book, am giving you an idea of the newer advice contained to get your resume noticed, the ease of readability, and the minor inconveniences of editing compared to the high value offered. In addition to mentioning at the bottom, other related books the author has written.
I found the material contained in this book to be exceptional! I followed the advice of another resume writing book several years ago and have written many resumes for myself and others over the years. I felt I was very knowledgeable, however in the current market I wasn't getting the attention I've had in the past, so I sought current information and found what my resume was missing in "Knock 'em Dead Resumes".
The goal of the resume design is to first increase the chances of getting your resume selected, and then initially capture the attention of the reader, so that they will take the time to peruse through the remainder.
I restructured my resume according to the advice in this book to:
1. Grab the reader's attention with a title for your resume.
2. Convey the story about you up front which gives a clearer picture of what you are about.
3. List key competencies that include search words that cause one's resume to rank higher in the sea of resume's competing within human resource databases.
4. List career highlights (optional).
5. In addition to other tips I found quite useful such as what to include and what not to, how to write your work history to include a combination of explanation and bullets, what font sizes to use, the value of white space for better readability, and why it's OK to use 2 pages.
I found great value in this format to better convey what I'm about, whereas I would notice with my previous resume that employers would have more effort involved in figuring out the info. presented, that this new format has substantially improved upon.
I don't usually have the patience to read a book cover to cover and initially thought I would try to skim through the book, but found that wasn't effective. It turned out to be a quick read however, because the latter half of the book contains numerous examples of resume formats that assisted me to glean what I liked (both in formatting and content) that made it easier to incorporate into my resume.
At first some of the new things that were explained were not readily clear to me until I started looking through the samples and once I did that, I found it easy to understand the concepts. I worked on my resume over a few sessions, and I found it easy to reference back to the specific sections of the resume that I was working on at the time.
The title on the front cover indicates "Over 5 million Knock 'em Dead" books Sold" and I am definitely a reader who intend to be a follower of his material. There is a section included in this book about writing good cover letters. He also has additional books, one of which expands on the cover letters with "Knock 'em Dead: Cover Letters", the other one is called "Knock 'em Dead: the Ultimate job Search Guide".
The few errors mentioned by other reviewers were of minimal inconvenience to me, especially in comparison to the huge overall value I gained from this book. I too feel very self-assured in my newly reformatted resume!

I have started writing resumes for my family members and friends with the Knock'em Dead books. I can honestly say that ever person has got the job they were looking for. The Knock'em Dead books are easy to read and have so much information that you would never think of. They are well worth the price. One friend got a job in Canada making $170,000.00 Per year. Knock'em Dead Resumes is well worth the money. But you need to get the Knock'em Dead Cover Letter Book too!!!
