With the sneak attach on American soil that most of us now call 9/11, the term "homeland security" became a part of the national dialogue and the title of the largest federal agency in the history of our country. Now in an updated and expanded third edition, "Introduction To Homeland Security: principles Of All-Hazards Response" by the team of Jane Bullock (who has served as chief of staff at FEMA and is currently with the Washington-based disaster management consulting firm of Bullock & Haddow LLC), George Haddow (Adjunct professor at the Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management at the George Washington University and also currently with Bullock & Haddow), Damon Coppola (a Senior Associate with Bullock & Haddow), and Sarp Yeletaysi (an expert in business continuity planning and disaster recovery) is a 602-page compendium that is the cornerstone textbook on the subject of rapidly evolving field of American homeland security. "Introduction To Homeland Security" begins with a history of the terrorist threat in American history from the early 19th century down to September 11, 2001. Subsequent chapters focus on the statutory authority for homeland security; organizational actions; terrorist-related hazards; our intelligence agencies as well as border and infrastructure security' prevention, mitigation and preparedness against attacks; response to and recovery from attack; communications; and technology. Of special note is the concluding chapter on the foreseeable future of homeland security. "Introduction To Homeland Security" is the basic textbook on the subject and a core addition to professional, governmental, academic, and community library National Security reference collections. It is also very highly recommended for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in Homeland Security and its implications for our American society, culture, and government.

I'll be using this text while teaching a college course in Homeland Security next month. I learned a number of things from this text that I didn't know, even after 17 years in Emergency Management. My only gripe is that they could have had a better list of URL's as well as educational links...

This book (Intro to Homeland Security, 3rd ed.) does a very good job of covering basically everything that has happened since the inception of the Department of Homeland Security. However, I think the book goes overboard in trying to cover every single little detail. It is usually difficult to find basic definitions to terms because you have to wade through so much peripheral information. The book doesn't do a very good job of getting to the point. This book would be much better if it had a comprehensive glossary of key terms and cooncepts. Overall, it is good for a textbook because it covers just about everything a person might need to know regarding Homeland Security, but I think it would be a better text if it were designed a little differently.
