Description:

Biometric recognition, or simply biometrics, is the science of establishing the identity of a person based on physical or behavioral attributes.  It is a rapidly evolving field with applications ranging from securely accessing one’s computer to gaining entry into a country. While the deployment of large-scale biometric systems in both commercial and government applications has increased the public awareness of this technology, "Introduction to Biometrics" is the first textbook to introduce the fundamentals of Biometrics to undergraduate/graduate students. The three commonly used modalities in the biometrics field, namely, fingerprint, face, and iris are covered in detail in this book. Few other modalities like hand geometry, ear, and gait are also discussed briefly along with advanced topics such as multibiometric systems and security of biometric systems. Exercises for each chapter will be available on the book website to help students gain a better understanding of the topics and obtain practical experience in designing computer programs for biometric applications. These can be found at: http://www.csee.wvu.edu/~ross/BiometricsTextBook/. Designed for undergraduate and graduate students in computer science and electrical engineering, "Introduction to Biometrics" is also suitable for researchers and biometric and computer security professionals.

5Awesome!Jan 02, 2012
By Prem
I am a Professor, an active researcher and a consultant to Government and Corporate establishments in Biometrics. I have been teaching a popular post graduate elective "Biometrics" to students at my University. While the authors of this book are renowned stalwarts in this area and their publications are widely used both in research and teaching, a comprehensive textbook was thus far elusive and more than needed. This book is a fine gift to the Biometrics community - exceeding expectations! The treatment of the subject is very lucid and precise, covering all areas and current challenges in Biometrics.

The supplementary material and exercises are excellent resources for augmenting students' understanding while there are extremely useful tips even for seasoned researchers with significant experience in the area. This book is a must read for teachers, students, researchers and Biometrics enthusiasts. For me personally, a long search is over!

4Excellent Text BookJan 07, 2012
By Sharathchandra Pankanti
This text book is expressly designed to provide an accessible and self-contained introduction to biometric technology for a diverse population of students and researchers irrespective of their technical background. The book does an excellent job of fulfilling its promised objective. In fact, there is no other biometrics book which comes to close to providing an overview of both foundational aspects of biometrics technology as well cogent details of mainstream techniques and contemporary topics such as latest developments and deployments. The introductory chapter does an excellent job of quickly bringing the readers up to speed on all broad aspects of the technology including socio-cultural issues. The next three chapters deal with three mainstream biometric technologies, namely, fingerprint, face, and iris. Each chapter covers important details of technology as well as applications where these biometric identifiers are being implemented and deployed to provide value to the end-users. One of the primary values of these chapters is that they are quick starters for anyone who desires to hit the ground running in understanding the biometric landscape without wading through a lots of research papers which may often use inconsistent terminology and vantage points potentially confusing to a neophyte. I also liked the separation of the essential material from the historical and bibliographical material. The latter material will also provide starting pointers for the students and researchers to initiate their more in-depth study of the topics. .The promised support URL ([...]) is already up and sets up a new and welcome precedent for biometrics text -- follow up of the text with other supporting material including pointers to code/data/hi-res versions of the illustrations in the book, which will be immensely helpful for both instructors and students alike. Less mainstream biometric identifiers such as ear, gait are covered in the following chapter along with soft biometrics. I liked coverage of soft biometrics including tattoo which is yet another unique and contemporary feature that sets this book apart from the other existing biometrics books. The chapters on multi-biometrics and security the do a great job of presenting the core ideas, organize(e.g., taxonomies) the concepts in a very systematic manner, and lay a solid foundation for the readers to put the relevant literature in perspective. I especially liked the presentation (fig 7.13) of relationship among encryption, feature transformation and cryptosystems which is useful to the uninitiated.

The authors could further improve the utility of the book in a couple of ways. While the authors have strived hard to cover non-pattern-recognition aspects of biometrics system, these details are somewhat scattered and buried in the text: It would be desirable to cover these details more substantially and systematically. As the authors correctly point out in the preface, a better coverage and articulation of these aspects of the field will help establish biometrics as a science in its own right. While it may be very difficult to objectively explain some technical ideas without appropriate mathematical props, I felt that the reach of the book can be significantly broadened by adding qualitative explanation to the portions of the text that dive deep into the equation studded maths (which could be sometimes intimidating even to a determined reader with less maths background).

Overall, the book handsomely lives up to its promise of developing an accessible introduction to the essential concepts of biometrics technology. All 311 pages of the impressive content exuberates with the industry, enterprise, and passion of the authors. I expect the work to become a classic biometrics text cherished by the students and expert alike in times to come.

5Excellent text and reference!!Feb 04, 2012
By Kar-Ann Toh
Biometric recognition is often perceived to be a rather specialized field. However, in view of its broad spectrum of data sources and multi-disciplinary techniques involved, it is among the best training grounds for pattern recognition. This book by Anil K. Jain, Arun A. Ross and Karthik Nandakumar is a long awaited book for such a training ground!

Differentiated from most other books on biometrics, this book is designed to provide a self-contained introduction to the basic concepts and methodologies for biometric recognition as well as to build a foundation on the subject matter.

In chapter 1, all related concepts, building blocks and terminologies are clearly explained, and this provides those readers who are unfamiliar with the topic a sound picture regarding the flow of biometric recognition, which also contains much the essence of a typical pattern recognition flow. Apart from the recognition issue, the security and privacy issues are introduced. This raises the awareness beyond technological issues in physical implementation. I find the bibliographical and historical remarks (including other chapters) particularly interesting as it traces the development of biometric systems where a retroactive review of current systems can be far more accessible.

While chapters 2, 3 and 4 focus on more developed biometrics such as fingerprint, face and iris, chapter 4 is devoted to emerging or less developed biometrics such as ear, gait, hand geometry and soft biometrics. Chapter 6 focuses on multibiometrics which capitalized on theories of information fusion. Through different sources and levels of fusion, the taxonomy of information fusion in the field is established. Chapter 7 introduces the structure of attack schemes. This provides a useful clue for useful biometric system implementation.

Last but not least, the resources provided in [...] are very helpful for more involved readers. Apart from sample exercises and additional references, links to databases and software are also provided. Sample Exercises for Chapters 1, 6 and 7 are particularly useful for assisting the readers with a better grasp of the subject. My only critique of this book is that similar exercises for remaining chapters are pending. I believe these exercises can be provided soon.

I congratulate the authors for yet another highly adopted book to come!

5Great Book on Biometric RecognitionJan 23, 2012
By Jie Zhou
Biometrics has been a very active research area over the past 10 years. The number of biometric deployments has increased rapidly throughout the world. However, it has been very difficult for universities to offer biometric courses for undergraduate students. Lack of a good textbook is one of the major causes. Introduction to Biometrics by Jain, Ross and Nandakumar will be indispensable for training a generation of young engineers and researchers. An excellent textbook will also significantly help instructors prepare their courses.

The authors have done a great job in balancing topics. More important biometric traits (fingerprint, face, and iris) are treated in detail, while other biometric traits are discussed briefly. The authors are also very careful in balancing subtopics. Take fingerprint recognition as an example. There exist several different methods for fingerprint representation and matching. Instead of covering all such methods, the authors have chosen the one, which is not only the most popular, but also has broader applications in other biometric modalities and computer vision problems. This will make the book easy to understand and very useful for students with different backgrounds.

Although the book covers many technologies that are quite new, it is very accessible. Take the chapter on biometric security as an example. A lot of people, including biometrics user group and even biometric researchers simply do not understand the importance as well as the difficulty of securing biometric templates. Although there are a number of technical papers and some good review papers on this topic, they are not very easy to read. But Section 7.5.1.1 of this book does an excellent job by comparing security of passwords to security of biometric templates. Figure 7.12 is quite useful for understanding the importance of securing biometric templates.

For the above reasons, I believe this book will surely become a classic in biometrics and will play a very important role in speeding up the development of biometric technology in the world. I have recommended this book for all the undergraduate and graduate students in my lab. I also strongly recommend this book to every biometric researcher and student. I definitely feel that this book has the best material to benefit people working in different areas of biometrics either in academia or industry. I have also planned to translate this book into Chinese so that Chinese researchers and students who have difficulty in understanding English can benefit from this excellent book.

This book is definitely the best book to learn biometrics at this point of time.

5A Must Have for Biometric ResearchersJan 15, 2012
By Damon Woodard

Over the past two decades, biometrics has received a significant amount of interest from the research community. Despite this, there has been a need for a comprehensive text on the topic. "Introduction to Biometrics" by Jain, Ross, and Nandakumar does an excellent job at addressing this need.

The authors are well established experts in the field of biometrics which is evident in the book's thorough coverage of well-established biometric technologies such as face and fingerprint recognition as well as material on less established topics such as soft biometrics and periocular recognition. The text is very well-written and clear explanations provided so that readers unfamiliar with some of the background material do not become completely lost.

My only critique of this book is that it lacks a chapter which discusses non-technical aspects of biometrics such as biometric technology use policy and ethics. Inclusion of this information would allow for a view of the challenges faced by the use of biometrics outside of the technical community. Overall this book is not only perfect as a text for an advanced undergraduate/graduate course on biometrics, but is highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in biometrics.
