Description:

Heinrich Himmler, an unremarkable looking man, was Hitler's top enforcer, in charge of the Gestapo, the SS, and the so-called Final Solution. We can only wonder, as biographer Peter Longerich asks, how could such a banal personality attain such an historically unique position of power? How could the son of a prosperous Bavarian Catholic public servant become the organizer of a system of mass murder spanning the whole of Europe?

In the first comprehensive biography of this murderous enigma, Longerich answers those questions with a superb account of Himmler's inner self and outward acts. Masterfully interweaving the story of Himmler's personal life and political career with the wider history of the Nazi dictatorship, Longerich shows how skillfully he exploited and manipulated his disparate roles in the pursuit of his far-reaching and grandiose objectives. Himmler's actual strength, he writes, consisted in redrawing every two or three years the master plans for his sphere of power. Himmler expanded that sphere with ruthless efficiency. In 1929, he took the SS--a small bodyguard unit--and swelled it into a paramilitary organization with elite pretensions. By the end of 1934 he had become Reich Chief of the Political Police, and began to consolidate all police power in his own hands. As Germany grabbed neighboring territory, he expanded the Waffen SS and organized the "Germanization" of conquered lands, which culminated in systematic mass murder. When the regime went on the defensive in 1942, Himmler changed his emphasis again, repressing any opposition or unrest. The author emphasizes the centrality of Himmler's personality to the Nazi murder machine--his surveillance of the private lives of his men, his deep resentments, his fierce prejudices--showing that man and position were inseparable.

Carefully researched and lucidly written, Heinrich Himmler is the essential account of the man who embodied Hitler's apparatus of evil.

5A monumental masterpiece !Dec 17, 2011
By Paul Gelman "PAUL Y. GELMAN"
This book is a microscopic yet panoramic history of one of the most notorious men who has ever lived on this planet. As the author puts it:" The aim of this biography is to penetrate as far as possible the mystery of this man's personality and the motives underlying his deeds". To do so, Professor Longerich has reconstructed the development of his personality, its essential character traits and the typical behaviour patterns in its formative years, which extend into the start of Himmler's political career. From a small bodyguard he took over in 1929 he created in a very short time a paramilitary organization with elite pretensions sworn to preserve the top party leadership. He then got appointed by Hitler to the post of Chief of the German Police, which he intended to amalgamate with the SS to form a state proteection corps to provide comprehensive internal security. He became the chief of the SS organization which destroyed the lives of many millions of innocent people throughout Europe.
In contrast to many other historians who saw the Holocaust as being the central aim of Kimmler's policy (a thesis supported by Richard Breitman and other respectable historians), Longerich claims that this was far from being so. Before discussing this aspect, it is worth writing about the structure and content of this magnificent volume.
It comes in six main parts divided into many sub-chapters and the first third of it is an exploration into the psyche and deeds of Himmler, who was born in 1900 and became part of a generation which suffered from a complex caused by having been too young to take an active role in WW1. Physically weak and emotionally inhibited, Himmler suffered from an attachment disorder in his social life which made it difficult for him to build up strong and lasting friendships. It was this factor which determined his behaviour towords the others in his adult life. Later, during the Weimar years, he was forced to take up a post as an assistant in a factory which produced fertilizers, after getting his diploma in agricultural studies. At this point he joined the German Nationalistic Party and around 1922-23 he gradually developed a coherent volkisch vision, which included a rejection of the Catholic faith, anti-Semitism, extreme nationalism, racism, a rejection of modernism combined with occult beliefs and Germanophile enthusiasms. He assumed the leadership of the SS when Nazism was on the point of rapidly becoming a mass movememnt and in only four years the SS grew to 50000 men.
This is where Longerich's book is at its best: it describes and analyzes in great detail to what extent Himmler had an impact on the daily life of his men. Himmler was regarded as the educator and a father figure to his SS men. He could act out his voyeuristic and manipulative tendencies by snooping into the private affairs of his SS med and their private spheres. Members of the SS were not to bond as mates but to submit to an iron discipline and employ the same reserved and social forms behind which Himmler concealed his own lack of social ease.
In June 1943, Himmler wrote to Ernst Kaltenbrunner asking him to inform SS man Wilhelm B., an official of the Alsace Gestapo, that Himmler was refusing his request to marry Frau Z., since she was older than him. Another case concerned Himmler's approval of a 17-year-old Unterscharfuhrer's marriage to a woman fourteen years older because she was expecting his child. Himmler prescribed four as being the smallest number of children to be expected in a good and healthy family. Everything was targeted in order to build the Third Reich and this by also developing a cult of the ancient Teutons, a reverence for the past and the drawing on the Ahnenerbe. All these elements were to be used in order to build a new order, a racial one, which would eliminate a collection of enemies which included communists, Freemasons, Jews, gypsies, asocials and homosexuals.
Here Professor Longerich makes his point very clear and succint: the Final Solution was only one major step in a series of actions whose purpose was to establish a new Reich by using a policy of unprecedented terror everywhere, or as he puts it, an "ideological and racist war of annihilation, decimating the Eastern countries (Poland, Russia), eliminating the ruling class by the destruction of millions of people with the help of his terror policy which would exploit more millions of survivors as slave labor for the construction of the new German Lebensraum, or living space".
From this point onwards, there is a gruesome description of the annihilation policies carried out by Himmler and his henchmen and his forces, his war against the partisans and the repression policies in the occupied territories, using the Waffen-SS for this purpose. The paradox was that the more the Third Reich headed toward its downfall, the more powerfull Himmler became. It was he who ordered the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto in January 1943. In the occupied Soviet territories at least 10000 gypsies and many more thousands of victims were murdered or sent to the crematoria in Poland.
However, when he realized that the war was lost somewhere around the middle of 1944, Himmler had been making various attempts to offer the Allied Jews who were in his power in exchange for foreign currencies or materials important for the war, presumably with the purpose of putting out feelers to probe the possibility of separate peace negotiations qith the Western powers. Having heard about this, Adolf Hitler flew into a rage and condemned Himmler as a traitor and expelled him from the party.
Himmler was now on the run but eventually surrendered himself to the British and then committed suicide. Thus ended the life of one of the most murderous evil men responsible for the Final Solution and for the murdering of many other millions of others. As chief of the SS, he commanded more than one million people, and in his capacity as the Interior Minister of the Reich he pursued a policy whose purpose was to create a new racial order in Europe. He was the man who desired to draft blue-eyed and tall Aryan men who could show family trees free of any inferior racial origins.
By drawing on tens of thousands of pages of documents and archives from seven countries, by checking many diaries and other pertinent documents and testimonies, Peter Longerich has written a magnificent and most impressive biography and historical work, a masterpiece which will definitely be unsurpassed for many years to come. This he has done in a very long but extremely readable 1000-page-long book using primary and secondary sources. This is one of the best books which have ever been published in the last decade and should be in everybody's library.

5Heinrich Himmler is a magnificent biography of the evil monster who was the head of the dread SS.Dec 30, 2011
By C. M Mills "Michael Mills"
Heinrich Himmler (October 7, 1900-May 1945) was responsible for the murders of millions of Europeans during the Nazi regime
(1933-45) Himmler was born into a conservative upper middle class family. His father was an elementary school teacher. He and his brothers were raised in the Roman Catholic Church. Himmler was too young to serve in World War I. Himmler graduated with a degree in agriculture; worked briefly in farming and at a fertilizer factory; married an older woman (by whom he had one child Gudrun) and joined the nascent Nazi Party in the early 1920s.
Himmler was tutored by Gregor Strasser and worked for SA Chief Ernst Rohm. He would join in the conspiracy to murder Rohm and increase the power of the SS in the 1930s. Himmler was the chief of the SS, Gestapo and Kripo (criminal police). The cruel man was orderly, formally polite and loved to interfere in the personal lives of his men. Himmler hated Jews,Communists, the Christian Church, homosexuals, political dissidents, Freemasons and Slavic people. The Reichfuhrer was interested in the occult and Nordic mythology. He was an odd chinless man who impregnated his secretary. She gave birth to two children. He and his henchmen were in charge of the extermination of Europe's Jewry sending millions to their deaths via firing squad, gas vans and gassing in the many extermination centers set up by Himmler in occupied Europe. He committed suicide when taken into British Army custody in May 1945.
Dr. Peter Longerich wrote this vast biography in the German language. Longerich is an expert on the holocaust against the Jews and teaches in London. The book shows how the pedantic Himmler grew his power base enabling him and the SS to launch
a reign of terror against their many enemies. Himmmler believed in land resettlement for the German nation. He was not adverse to illegitimate babies being born since this increased the manpower of Germany.
This is a magisterial volume on Himmler and is the best biography available on the SS chief. This is one of the best biographies of a Nazi leader I have ever read. The book is detailed and is a very grim read. It is excellent and truthful history with an extensive bibliography; countless photographs and a deep understanding of the subject. Highly recommended!

5Heinrich Himmler by Peter LongerichFeb 12, 2012
By Kim Burdick
.
Nice middle class Catholic boy. Nerdy teen. Cheating husband. Loving father. Thoughtful boss. Manipulative, micromanaging monster. Truth is always stranger than fiction, and the story of Heinrich Himmler is no exception.

Peter Longerich is a superb scholar. The book is long but interesting. The writing is compelling and carefully footnoted. "Heinrich Himmler" could be used as a textbook in any number of graduate-level courses. A business course based on Himmler's management style would probably be well-attended. An ethics course based on Himmler's decisions would be equally well-attended. A psychology course based on Himmler's dispassionate path to social engineering, mass murder, and suicide would be fascinating.

New material to me was Himmler's antipathy towards the Catholic Church and his desire to revive Germany's ancient pagan religion; his almost voyeuristic scrutiny of the the family lives of his men; the government-sanctioned kidnapping and redistribution of ethnic German children; and the sheer scope of power Hitler granted to Himmler.

Longerich presents fact after fact in this carefully-footnoted 1,031 paged book, until the reader is almost numbed to the magnitude of Himmler's evil. One could gag on Himmler's never-ending emphasis on decency and courage.

Side note: The binding of this volume is of poor quality. A book of this size should be produced in a two volume set or designed with a larger font and sewn signatures. The smaller than usual type face is tiring to read and pages keep falling out of this newly-purchased book.

Good book. Worth reading.

5When the end justifies the means...Feb 04, 2012

I'll not synopsize, as the two previous reviewers have done so quite adequately. Having read Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, and Evan's Third Reich trilogy (Coming of..., ...In Power, and ...At War), I was adequately prepared for Longerich's tome. I appreciated the fact that he did not, while providing this biography, feel obliged to recount the details of the surrounding melieu; for me, this was perfect. On the other hand, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to the Third Reich; without an effective and reasonably detailed pre-existing knowledge of the Reich's broader history, I fear much of the nuance of this masterpiece would be lost on the casual reader.

That said, there's nothing nuanced about being one of the most notorious mass murderers in human history, and Longerich skilfully guides the reader along the path that lead a schoolmaster's good son to such an end. Heinrich Himmler was not born bad, but how he turned out that way makes for fascinating reading...he was a product of his genes, he would have insisted, but also of his environment. The truly chilling subtext for Longerich's readers today lies in the conditions that allowed HH to become who he did: economic crisis, bitter political polarization, political domination by the wealthy elite, endless streams of propaganda urging more polarization and extreme remedies, erosion of civil liberties and the rule of law, and acceptance of the belief that noble ends justify any and all means. Heinrich Himmler did not reach his zenith in a vacuum--he did it with the complicity, or at least silent acquiescence, of millions of his countrymen; that is a warning to us all.

An interesting, and very long book that is extremely well researched. I would have given it four and a half stars because I thought some parts could have undergone substantive editing and still made the authors points.

What I came away with was the belief that I "knew" Himmler in the sense that if I was required to work for him or write a position paper I would know what he wanted to hear. He was a monster but a monster who was not a giant intellectually. Rather the times, his consummate skill at bureaucratic maneuvering, and being a true believer had given him access to power that was disproportionate to his ability to manage, let alone implement. In the end he was only successful at one thing; killing millions of civilians.

Himmler was a man who defined himself as a warrior yet he had never fired a shot in anger or had one shot at him. How he defined himself, and that is what much of this book is about, guided his molding of the SS.

This is also an interesting book because it mentions the HSSPF and how they were selected. Most of them were Himmler's men and placed in their jobs because he owned them. Why he owned them is fascinating in its own right. He was a master at manipulation, especially of the flawed, and used them, often until they broke.

The final chapters on the end of the Third Reich, his time as commander of Army Group Vistula, and his craven sell out of his ideals in hopes of retaining power are well done.

I read Padfield's book on Himmler and it was a better read but not as informative as this book.
