Get Newest Edition and Free RADStickerAug 10, 2010

I just finished the 3rd Edition and decided to update my review. The newest edition is everything that the second was but more of it! Nearly everything has been ported over from the 2nd Edition, including all the topics associated with the fourteen needs: food, water, shelter, light, electrical power, heating/cooling, air, electricity, sleep, first aid, communication, financial preparedness, transportation, and protection. Added to that solid base of material are plenty of new topics, such as handling dead bodies, staying alive in a gun fight, buying gold, operating Ham radios, starting a fire, and more. There is also a full chapter on electromagnetic pulse attacks and solar storms.
Note that the author has a couple of other books on Amazon. Obviously, there is the 2nd Edition of this handbook, and if money is an issue, I recommend that you get that one instead (save about $7--priced at $17.95). There is also a book titled, "Disaster Preparedness Handbook: A Guide for Families (Second Edition)", which despite its title is actually a reprint of an older book - a few years old now. Even though it is sold very cheaply, I don't recommend it because it is much less complete than the 2nd or 3rd Editions of this handbook.
Bottom line is that this 3rd Edition of the handbook is the best one-stop resource for getting yourself or your family better prepared. It will easily save you much more than the $25 it costs by keeping you on track to implementing a practical disaster preparedness plan -- no more buying stuff you don't need.
I bought 3rd Edition handbook from the author's website, disasterpreparer dot com. Saved money and got a free RADSticker too--it's a portable radiation dosimeter, way cool.

The Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness bridges a very important gap between survivalism and preparedness. In the text, the author outlines effective, but more importantly, achievable, steps that your family can take to prepare for a wide variety of dangerous events. And though it has been made clear that the book is not a conventional "live off the land" survival manual, it does offer information on many related topics, including water collection by natural resources (solar still, rain collection, etc.), sheltering in your vehicle should you ever become stranded, electricity generation using batteries and generators, and valuable first aid techniques.
The book is a family-friendly guide, discussing the importance of creating a balanced food storage plan that the entire family can live with, objectively reviewing which water purification methods leave water tasting the best - important for finicky drinkers, and discussing how best to care for children and elderly family and friends. That is not to suggest that the hardcore survivalist would not benefit from much of the information as well. The author references his recommendations and facts to countless documents and reports from FEMA, CDC, the Red Cross, the World Health Organization, and other reputable agencies.

The Handbook to Practical Preparedness for the Family is just that... a practical guide for individuals or families interested in preparing for nearly any kind of disaster. It covers extensive preparations for hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blackouts, pandemics, economic collapse, radiation leak, and so much more.
The way the book is organized is very efficient with a chapter dedicated to each of what the author calls our fourteen needs (food, water, medicine... that sort of thing). There are also chapters that deal with specific threats, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, solar storms, etc. He also has one chapter that deals with family needs: children, elderly, pets, etc.
I've read most of the disaster prep books on the market... Spigareli's, Rawles', Lundins', etc. I have a nice collection, and each book certainly offers a new perspective. For me, personally, I find that this is the most useful of the bunch. There is so much information in here, I can't imagine anyone, even a hardcore prepper, not learning something from it.

This well written guide is a book every person interested in the safety of themselves, their family, and their property should consider. Unlike many books of this type, instead of telling us how to survive a post-nuclear appocalypse it focuses on planning for the problems that are most likely to happen to most of us, from fire to natural disaster to financial collapse, and makes practical recommendations to not only survive them, but to survive in a fashion that maintains physical and emotional health, and leaves you prepared to recover and continue after the disaster has passed. I suspect there are thousands f people in New Orleans who wish they had made an invetnory of their important documents and collected them so that in the event of an evacuation they were able to take them with them as they left. This guide not only suggests what should be gathered, but provides a convienent format for recording the information so that it is available when you are getting ready to head for higher ground.
I spent 20 years in the military, been a Scoutmaster, 4H Instructor, Paramedic, and Camp Staff member, and I have never encountered a more useful, to the point, and easily used reference. Dr. Bradley has done a wonderful job of researching the available information on keeping ourselves and those important to us safe and consolidating it into concise, well written chapters that cover the preparations required to enable a practical response to real world threats. Equally importantly, he provides a bibliography to help you explore each topic in greater detail if desired.
Perhaps the best feature of this guide are the various appendices that contain checklists and blank forms to help you to assess your current condition, and to make preparations to protect yourself and your possessions from the kind of natural and man-made disasters we see everyday on the news. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is in a position where they are responsible for the well being of others, not just heads of households, but schools, employers, scout leaders, and anyone else who is concerned with getting through the next Katrina with their health and sanity intact.
Thank you sir for the service you have provided by addressing practical and attainable preparation for situations that we are actually likely to encounter.

This book is even better than in the description. Very well researched, written, and produced. If you only get one book on disaster preparedness, get this one. The author has obviously gone through a lot of trouble to make this the best book out there on the subject. Plus, let me tell you my story about this transaction:
I initially got the version for Kindle. It was a lot cheaper than the physical book, and I love Kindle books. I was unhappy because it was more of a PDF than the typical Kindle format. Due to my failing eyesight (getting old sucks), I couldn't read everything and could not make the text bigger. I asked for a refund- Amazon processed it in a very timely manner (good for them). Then I received an email from the author himself. He apologized and said he would remove the book from Kindle until it was done right (which he did). So, I got the book, and am very happy with my purchase- definitely worth the price, and then some. I think we all should support such excellent customer service, especially these days when it's so difficult to find. Not only a good seller, a very good author, but also an exceptionally good book. My faith in humanity is restored- at least for a little while.
