I was hoping that this book would lean more towards a study guide, but it does not. It is simply a summary of everything on the website that is available to take the tests. I also felt that it really wanted you to purchase their Learning System. The system is great if being bought by a company, but I know I do not have $800 lying around to buy it. The only helpful thing in it was a resource page for books that will help you study for the testing.
Don't buy this book unless you are looking only for a break down of the test, and sugguested study methods.

Don't buy this book. I agree with both of the other reviews. It was a waste of money. I thought it would help me in preparing for the PHR because I don't have the money for the expensive Learning System. Use your money to purchase a book that will be an aid to helping you study and pass the PHR or SPHR.

I purchased the book at the SHRM Store. It is total 86 pages and most of the comments are the certification introduciton. I am going to attend the test by end of this year, but it will not help me at all.
The price in SHRM is 20.00 + 5.00 transportation total 25.00. Very expensive in terms of the value.
I still need to search the good books for my test.

When I decided that I wanted to sit-in for the PHR; which I am scheduled to take Jan. 2011, I was undecided on which study plan to choose. I began searching for study methods and went for a self-study-plan. I purchased the PHR/SPHR Study Guide by Anne M. Bogardus, SPHR. I noticed that I wasn't retaining much information; while Anne's guide does contain what I think any seasoned HR Professional needs to prepare for the exam, I must say it isn't the only source I recommend test candidates rely on for a study program. I received an email that suggested the Official PHR and SPHR Certification Guide; went ahead and bought it, at first I was dissapointed because it is a small book with a total of 86 pages you can brouse thru in a day. I decided to begin my journey thru the pages, first I took the assessment test in the back, that is when I realized how Anne's study guide alone wasn't going to do it for me. I have revamped my study plan "thanks to this guide" just by following the recommended schedules on pages 33 & 34. I feel I am on the right track now and feel confident that I will be ready for the exam. Use different sources but make sure they are reliable, the SHRM website is an awesome place to start and make sure any products you obtain or endorsed by the HRCI. Good luck to all of you walking the same journey. This book is serving the purpose for which I bought it, I see it as a map which is guiding me to reach my goal. Keep in mind it is NOT a study guide.

I am studying for the PHR and figured the book put out by HRCI would be helpful, but it isn't at all. There are practice questions, which are always nice, but every other PHR book has those as well. This guide gives you study tips, but presumably you have studied for a test before and know how you study. You can definitely skip this one and go for more specific HR books to prepare.
