Disappointing For The IT Security ProfessionalsApr 04, 2010
By A. Jahangiri I purchased this book two years ago while I was busy in a massive physical security project. This book is not the book that helps the IT security professionals in their jobs. It just provides general information about computer networking and applying IP based devices such as IP cameras for physical security.
Nevertheless, it might be useful for the university students or those who wants to learn basic computer networking with something extra such as IP cameras.
Adequate but not worth the priceMar 14, 2011
By DBCooper There is absolutely no way I would pay over $20 for this book.
Sure, it provides a general overview of how security systems are migrating to IP but it doesn't go nearly into the depth and detail that would warrant the $66 sticker price(or even much lower prices). For that kind of price I would expect an encyclopedic reference type book. This book is a shallow introduction and it does an ok job of introducing the uninitiated to networking but, as the previous reviewer said, if you have even a basic knowledge of networking(I'm barely 6 months into it as only a student) half of this book will be beneath your skill level. If you aren't familiar with networking I'd recommend a book specifically about that subject.
This book also shares a pet peeve I've had with other security industry books. Instead of providing more general reference material or perhaps a section on system layout and design, the author fills almost half the book with walk-throughs explaining how to set up software, cameras, etc. that would be included in any manuals that come with these products. Any monkey can figure this stuff out.
