| | | | Spyware | Home » » » » EMP Survival: :How to Prepare Now and Survive, When an Electromagnetic Pulse Destroys Our Power Grid | | | | | | | Description: | | Military strategists in four countries have boasted that they can cripple the U.S. with an EMP attack. Other countries have protected their power grids from an EMP attack. The U.S. power grid is still vulnerable. A widespread power outage could take years to restore because the EMP destroys electronics including circuits and transformers.
Even unplugged electronics can be damaged. Only electronics stored in a faraday cage are protected.
Fuel, communications, power, water, and food will be unavailable within hours when emergency fuel runs out. Gas pumps and even pipelines rely on electronics. Mob violence from mass evacuation of uninhabitable metropolitan areas will be a significant security issue within days. This book describes the risks and details how to prepare and survive.
Readers should also prepare for a potential nuclear attack. Radiation Survival: How to Prepare Now and Survive Radiation Exposure, is now available. | | | Product Details: | | | Author:

Very, very good!Jul 23, 2011
By Grits The title is "EMP Survival," not how to build faraday cages, etc. While there is good information about faraday cages and other engineering and theoretical information, the value of this book is that it combines some excellent, practical, and detailed tips about real survival (from the author's experience, not just from someone else's "be prepared for disaster" list). In addition, he emphasizes how an EMP can (and would) strike with probably no warning to the general public. At first it would seem that your power is simply out - something we've all experienced. But it then goes on to explain how to determine that we've been hit with an EMP by trying other electronic devices. He goes over what might work, what might or probably would not work, and somewhat on how to protect AGAINST an EMP. This isn't an engineering book, and should not be rated against that criteria. And at the "Kindle" price for our Andriod phone, it was outstanding. While we already practice some emergency preparation items including food storage, cooking options, heating, light, protection, etc., this had some tips and personal experience with various products or commodities that was very helpful to us. It's great for beginners as well as those reasonably far along in their preparation - particularly those that have not been very aware of EMP as a very real potential threat. It can even happen because of a large solar storm, not just from a terrorist nuclear device.
It should be noted that a freighter just miles off one of our coasts could launch a short to medium range missile with a relatively small nuclear bomb, and get it high enough to create a devastating EMP across hundreds or even thousands of square miles. And a larger missile (such as an ICBM) carrying a larger device that detonates over the central US (over Iowa, approximately), at a height of around 250 miles, would likely result in the loss of almost all electronic equipment (including the power grid system) nation wide. Recovery from a nation-wide event would likely be measured in years, not weeks or months like a more localized EMP - and the author stresses that possibility very well, I think. No heating/cooking (except fires), no refrigeration, no mechanized transportation, no power tools, no natural gas, no water - basically, we'd be in the early 1800s in an instant, with no way forward for a long, long time. Preparation is a must.
This isn't just a theoretical but highly improbable event - it's a very real threat that Congress has investigated many times. We just don't hear about it on the nightly news, where politics or Hollywood scandals dominate the headlines.

Excellent book!May 25, 2011
By T. Cotham I followed up reading "One Second After" with this book and found it to be very useful and informative. I've already taken some of the steps recommended in this book and keep telling myself "Better to be prepared and never need it than to be caught off guard." While the specter of an EMP disaster is very scary, the thought of being caught unprepared for the day the lights go out kept me up at night. This book has given us some good ideas about what to have on hand so we can keep going.
Be a good scout - BE PREPARED. This book will give you some good ideas.

Truthful but very elementalOct 18, 2011
By gahmd Wish I'd read Highlander419's review more closely before ordering. Very basic information only in this book. I guess when Highlander spoke about this being the equivalent of a high school paper I made the mistake of thinking back to the level of detail and diagramming I put into my own high school projects. My mistake. Anyone with any level of insight on the EMP problem already knows everything of value in this book. Uncertain? Spend 10 minutes reading an internet search on EMP and you'll know as much as this book professes to provide.
EMP is a very real and substantial threat. If you've read "One Second After" then you've already learned essentially everything you can learn from this book, in a much more engaging format.
Anyone who thinks this book's recounting is "detailed" has a very simplistic understanding of what details are. It does branch into a number of other survival topics. Unfortunately, this is space which the book sorely needed to use for completing its mission in reviewing EMP and EMP preparedness. 3 pages out of 235 on Faraday cages should tell you that this is not a book of substance. If you're interested in "Appendix A other survival scenarios" then take the money you would spend on this and buy "Patriots".
If you want to learn about EMP take the money you would spend on this and buy "One Second After". Read the internet on EMP... while you can.

InformativeJun 22, 2011

After reading "One Second After", I went in search of more information regarding EMP attacks. This book is very informative in talking about our enemies, and what they are planning, plus what our government is, or isn't, doing to help protect our vulnerable infrastructure against such an attack. The survival part is broken down into easy to read, and understand, sections. It covers a large amount of topics, and gives the reader more ideas for what to do when, and if, such a disaster should hit our country. I really enjoyed this book.

OK but not much FaradayOct 29, 2011
By M. Stanley Every survival book has usable info that we should be aware of. This one gives us the basics. I was looking for more information on Faraday cage construction than the conflicting info found online. Here was a simplified reiteration of what is found online. After reading this book, I found another book that is so far the most detailed concerning Faraday cage theory, design, and construction. It is titled Solar Flare Survival. Check it out.Solar Flare Survival: Protect Yourself And Your Electronics From The Sun And EMP's With Faraday Cages (Volume 1)
