 Rather be punched in the face...Sep 24, 2010

Since you're reading this review, I gather that you have managed to successfully navigate to Amazon and are considering making an online purchase. Congratulations! If you are able to complete tasks of similar difficulty, like using a keyboard, running a program, and finding information with a search engine, you already know everything in this book.
However, let's just imagine for a minute that you don't know how to get onto Amazon or use Google. Well, guess what!? This book manages to teach you how to do that in a mere 920 pages! That's longer than any world history text I have ever used. They manage to fit the entire history of civilization into fewer pages than this book.
If I had to choose between using this textbook and getting hit in the face, I would choose getting hit in the face. It's less painful and cheaper.

This book is an overview of how computers are used in society, business, personal use etc. Lots of detail and discussion of related themes associated with the various chapters. Extra detail at end of each chapter that goes into depth, links are given to help with additional research of the topics. The web site associated with the book is quite interactive and helps with absorbing the information. None of the chapters go into intense depth but are simply an introduction for a first semester college student. Lots of information though. If you read the entire book you will have a high level grasp of the use of computers.

An Abuse of the System - Do Not Waste MoneyMar 29, 2011

This 1000 page book could have been written (and would have better communicated its message if done so) in less than 100 pages. This is an abuse of the sytem with students having to pay for (many times the Federal Government) this kind of crap.
Everything in this book was dragged on and on and on, and it is painfully obvious that it does so in order to provide pages, just for the purpose of looking good.
Do not say you have not been warned!

If you have a class that uses this book, TEST OUT OF IT! The first chapter tells you what a computer is. The second chapter tells you what the internet is, and the third chapter tells you what software is. Obviously if you are on Amazon looking at this book you know all of this already.

This book did not come with page numbers, which made it extremely difficult when my teach who barely spoke English said "go to page 243" and I had to ask all those around me what page 243 looked like because somehow Cengage (the publisher) hasn't yet figured out how to meet audience needs. Seriously guys? Get yourself together. I will never (again) buy a book from Amazon for school that does not have page numbers.
