CENSORED: US Military Worlds Worst Polluter!Oct 10, 2010
By nmollo Censored 2011 is a book that covers over 25 important stories that have been censored or omitted from mainstream corporate news coverage from 2009 to 2010.
The importance of this book in presenting the painful truth cannot be over estimated.
The Project Censored Team includes over 30 Universities around the world that study mainstream media content and report in detail on news stories that the corporate media would prefer us not to know.
Such a story is that the US Department of Defense is the Worst Polluter on the Planet. This revelation goes largely unreported. The fact that the US Department of Defense is beholden to no pollution controls is disturbing. Large portions of Iraq are irradiated due to the use of depleted uranium armaments (DU) and reports confirm that 1 in 4 babies born in Iraq have birth defects directly attributable to this DU pollution.
Afghanistan has also suffered from the results of unrestrained US Military Air strikes. The mountains of Tora Bora, that supply much of the drinking water to the surrounding lands have now been polluted with depleted uranium in the name of finding Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida.
Other stories include the concerted effort by the mainstream corportate media to downplay civilian casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan, which at present exceed one million.
Project Censored has compiled a list of censored news stories and examinations of current media practices that paint a disturbing picture of the world we currently inhabit.
That so many people are ill informed about what is really going on in our world is a testament to the power of influence the mainstream corporate media has over all our lives.
I am sure we can all agree that news coverage should be honest and unflinching in reporting unpalatable truths. What is clear from reading the revelatory Censored 2011 is that we are constantly bombarded with military propaganda, outright lies, junk food news, sins of omission, faux news and overt news abuse.
A clear example of this is why there is no rational or dispassionate debate concerning the numerous anomalies, lies and misinformation concerning the events of September 11th 2001. This particular event more than any other needs to be explored for no other reason than it has been used as the excuse for two illegal invasions, escalation of US drone attacks in Pakistan, the loss of civil liberties in America and the United Kingdom and an exponential rise in military industrial complex spending.
I recommend this book as a essential tool for uncovering some of the reality of the world we live in today. My gratitude extends to all the Universities and their students that have contributed to this important work, Censored 2011 and particularly Mickey Huff and Dr. Peter Phillips for their tireless effort in bringing some much needed honestly to ailing journalistic practices.

A Valuable Source In Today's Murkey Media ClimateNov 02, 2010
By Steve Mcintosh
"macgeist3224"
If you.. -get all of your world news from your TV -think most political issues boil down to "right and left" ideals -think JFK and 9/11 theories are conspiracy crock -are unable of serious critical thought ..then this book is not for you.
I picked this up a month ago and have not been able to put it down since. The subjects are scholarly and the authors are credentialed. Every segment has source material via web links for the reader to see for themselves. The title of the book really only refers to the first chapter, the rest covers updates on stories from the last book, prospects for hope around the world, as well as expressing the dire need for full scale change in our established institutions. This is not an idealist essay; it is an academic collective of current affairs. I don't know what disturbs me more, the stories themselves or how little the American public is aware of these stories. We need, esp in the US, more news organizations like Project Censored. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who seeks an honest image of global affairs.

Censored 2011 - Mickey Huff, Peter Phillips and Project Censored (Seven Stories Press)Oct 14, 2010
By BlogOnBooks
"BlogOnBooks"
It's no secret that the news business is in a state of upheaval unlike anything were seen in our lifetimes. Broadsheets are slashing staffs, 24-hour cable news is becoming a junk food cafeteria, while the blogosphere becomes more leading edge by the day. So how could it be that some stories still never see the light of day or that the free market economy can still somehow trump the free press?
Welcome to Censored 2011. In response to the phenomenon of selective news squelching, (or at minimum, gross under reporting) the folks at Seven Stories Press have been publishing an annual compendium of stories that somehow elude the spotlight of the national or international press, or are deemed secret or not worthy of coverage by the ever popular mainstream media.
The latest edition in the series pulls back the curtain on a host of stories that are troubling in their impact and widespread in their scope. Among the `censored' stories you might have missed in 2009-10 so far are: global plans to replace the dollar (a must read), the U.S. funding of the Taliban, how big pharma manipulated swine flu data to their benefit, how ICE operates secret detention and courts, and how the U.S. Dept. of Defense is the worst polluter on the planet.
All these and many more are the subject of serious levels of scrutinous reporting but reporting that almost never reaches the mainstream media. The reasons these stories never surface in the MSM are legion, but as this reportage shows, much of it lies in the fact that these stories have long arcs and are sufficiently detailed as to not make for good soundbite journalism in this age of the three minute television or single-page web news story. (Not to mention, of course, that there are those that benefit from obscuring the truth.)
As the annual voice of the Media Freedom Foundation, this volume does an excellent job of not just presenting stories hidden from general view, but also offering extensive legitimisers in terms of sourcing, credits, updates and followups. The book also serves as a manual for those who seek further involvement in the project's truthseeking efforts giving readers access to committee members, supporting universities, submission guidelines, judge info and more. Beyond the stories they surface, the openness of the organization and the nobility of their mission, is perhaps the best insurance we have against the multivariate limitations at play in the mainstream (corporate) media. Pay attention.

Words circulating freely, rebelliously, frighten tyrants (R. Kapuscinski)Mar 01, 2011
By Luc REYNAERT In this mightily important new edition of Project Censored, the main top 25 censored stories are centered again on very serious issues.
Main issues a global financial plan to replace the dollar (the cornerstone of US power), Unresolved aspects of the 9/11 attacks (two towers hit, three down - L. Margulis) Civil liberties and the right to privacy (internet control) Environmental problems (still toxic water in Bhopal after 25 years) (nanotech particles in hygiene products, pharmaceuticals, paint, packaging) (created by US military: depleted uranium particles, mines and bombs) The monumental swine flue hoax ( a bonanza for the private sector) Secrets wars (in Pakistan) US support of the Taliban in Afghanistan Human rights abuses in Palestine Agricultural land grabs in Africa
Other very important information SCADs (State Crimes Against Democracy) President Obama and the Trilateral Commission The `War on Terror" (turning the US into a national security State, where everybody is a terrorist suspect - K. Borjesson) The question if the Iraq War is a `Just War'? Junk food news (the year of the `Tiger')
The state of the Union The editors sketch a very sorry picture of the US with liberty and security in danger, a widening income gap, an imploded economy, its ecosystem in danger, corrupt banks, soaring unemployment and foreclosures, military programs bigger than the rest of the world combined and fighting endless wars. For the Right, the government is the root of all problems, but they forget that `the government is heavily influenced, if not controlled, by private sector elites.'
The Media and Democracy The media are following H. L. Mencken's statement that `a newspaper is a device for making the ignorant more ignorant and the crazy crazier.' They are only interested in mass deceptions, faux debates, pseudo-events and `omerta'. As C. Hedges all importantly states: `a democracy survives when its citizens have access to trustworthy and impartial sources of information. Otherwise, it dies'.
This book, with an excellent index and formidable bibliographies, is a must read for all freedom and democracy lovers and all those interested in the world we live in.
