This is a great gift for yourself and othersJan 02, 2012

I discovered this book just in time for the holidays. I bought it for all the women who work in my shop and I'm excited to see what they learn from it. The book is inviting and engaging, and the suggestions for improving your life are easy to do. Some of my favorite tips explain why it's okay to eat chocolate. Many are ideas I've heard before, but I love knowing the science that backs them up. I plan to give this book to all my friends as the perfect birthday gift for starting a new year of healthy living and eating more chocolate!

Jessica's book is so well written and organized to impact each day getting better than the day before. I like using the book as sort of pot-luck by just opening it to a random page and implementing that tip for the day.

Academic experts & studies reinforce and give credence to the tips.Jan 05, 2012

You know if Andrew Weil is quoted on the cover it must be good!
What sets this book apart for me, is having the academic experts or studies to reinforce and give credence to the tips.
Its frustrating to read know-it-all self-help experts that aren't relying on any empirical justification for their theories; I think that's why many of the tips in this book do resonate so well--they are reinforced by case studies or experts in an academic discipline, not some guru's mere opinion.
One thing I would have liked is if the book included citations to the studies, but the editors probably nixed these in the interest of keeping the pages brief & tidy.
Generally I'm not one to purchase or read a book like this, but have enjoyed leafing through the tips and even though I've heard some of the tips previously (& not "all" of the tips are for me), having a study to reinforce the concepts gives some good food to chew on, and easy tips to impact your life for the better.
Take Tip 5 for example:
"Loud conversations and heaping platters of food are two cornerstones of family-style dinners. Unfortunately, having all of that food so close at hand makes going back for seconds, or thirds, feel less like a choice than an inevitability.
To test this idea, scientists at Cornell University recently measured the amount of food consumed when eaters sat in front of or away from serving dishes. Not surprisingly, when the food was out of sight, it was also out of mind, though the degree to which the serving style influenced eating was astounding. Without the temptation within arm's reach, participants ate 20 to 29 percent less than they did when the extra helpings were in front of them. To host family dinners that don't result in aching bellies, cut down on mindless munching by serving food away from the dinner table."

Self-improvement made manageable - perfect gift ideaJan 02, 2012

This is the first self-improvement book I've bought and actually read. Rather than simply author-as-expert, I like that Jessica Cassity instead delivers dozens and dozens of experts in a variety of health and well-being areas. I keep it on my bedside table so that I can choose (randomly--it doesn't necessarily need to be read in order from tip 1 to 365) a tip for the day as I procrastinate getting out of bed in the morning. The information is manageable in size and feels so doable. I already gave it to my mom and a few girlfriends, and together we're trying to make 2012 healthier and happier through these tips.

Sometimes you need a gentle reminder that the glass is actually half-full, that the way you think going into a situation will change what you get out of it. And that's exactly what Better Each Day is--a reminder that you can will your way to a happier place by taking just a moment every day to see the positive (half-full), rather than the negative (half-empty) in your life. Each expert tip (365!) gives you a tangible, intimidation-free way to actively change your day for the better. Jessica Cassity did a great job interviewing amazing experts who you can trust to give you the best advice, and I'm loving following it. This book is a perfect, feel-good gift and will instantly add sunshine to your living room (love the bright, beautiful cover) and life!
