Great Resource for the CPT ExamMay 13, 2012
By Jeff Wagner This is a great addition to the textbook to use as a study aid for when preparing for the ACSM Personal Trainer exam. The other book I would recommend (besides ACSM's Resources for the Personal Trainer) is ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. If you have to choose get this book, ACSM's Certification Review, and of course the main textbook. It is worth getting this book since it provides an in-depth explanation of each topic covered in the exam. I liked the organization of this book as well, can easily cross-reference and jump to specific topics using the table of contents/index. This is my third cert, started with NSCA and then went to NASM. They all have different applications so each one served a purpose. My experience with ACSM as a whole has been a very good one.
I don't think any other certification is given me the level of understanding of physiological processes that this cert has done. Very interesting to learn of the small difference each organization preaches. If you are new to the industry and plan on training with the general population, I might recommend starting with NASM or NSCA, since ACSM is much more clinical than the other two. However, if you want to learn everything there is to know about the body and/or you plan on working with the special population; there is no better source of education than ACSM.
I love how no-one tells you when you first start working in a health club that you'll be turned into a salesperson and given commission in the form of the hourly training sessions you are able to sell. I could definitely do without that part of the business. I could have also used more instruction with how to do sales, which is a part of every certification that is severely lacking. I didn't find this book until years later, but will pay it forward now; The Personal Training Sales Education Textbook: A simple and effective sales system designed specifically for the personal trainer in the health club. (Volume 1). This book is short, about 100 pages, but explains how to sell personal training sessions without the pushiness or hard sell techniques many of these clubs teach now-a-days. I would probably trade two of my certifications if I could go back to the beginning of my career and learn a sales process like this one instead of struggling and tripping over myself for the next couple years until I finally did learn how to confidently and consistently sell personal training to people who actually needed it.
In summary, start with the certification that most appeals to your industry. Remember, there are differences. Reading ACSM's Certification Review isn't mandatory to pass the exam, but an extra tool definitely worth having. And if you are new to the industry, start to now develop a knowledge of sales techniques and processes. You will have to do this sooner or later, might as well do it now.

Fine for the exam, but chocked full of errorsJan 24, 2012
By Fancy Pants Read through ACSM's Resources for the Personal Trainer cover-to-cover first, then go through this review guide (minus the last two chapters), and take all of the chapter review quizzes and you should be fine on the CPT exam. This text has tons of typos and even some wrong answers for the quizzes (just the answer letter is wrong--the explanations give you the correct answer), but as a whole, it does the trick for preparing you for the exam.
A few caveats; if you don't know your way around a gym, you will miss a lot of questions on the CPT exam, as neither this text nor ACSM's Resources for the Personal Trainer cover spotting techniques or discuss which free-weight exercises work which muscles. Also, the ACSM CPT exam is very clinical in nature, making it one of the more difficult CPT exams out there. As long as you review the textbooks, though, the exam shouldn't be too difficult.
Good luck!

ACSM's Certification ReviewMar 13, 2009
By Will Dillard Very well written, concise. Important points noted in bold type. Very thorough and detailed information. Probably have gained more knowledge from the review than from the other textbooks and reference information originally used for education.

I needed this book to pass the acsm test and it arrived very quickly. I think the book was a good review but I dont feel that any of the questions that were in the book were even on the test.
